Catching Z's wherever we can

It was a long, long nigt just hanging out while our other group of six finished they night runs. We struggled to get some sleep, but managed an hour or less.

We ended up parked one stop ahead of where we were supposed to be and had to race up one leg to meet our incoming runner. We arrived just in time.

We set off our runner at 6 am and finised around noon in Milwaukee.

Our runners are making their way through Lake County now on the way to Chicago!

It's dark now. Strict regulations requires lots of lights, running vests, & cell phones.

We're still on a park trail so it's very, very dark. Lots of running to do yet but we're holding up.

Runners have been on the Glacier Drumlin Trail for a while now. Lots of bugs out here. The sun is behind clouds but it's still super hot.

We hope to find a comfy church to nap in later. We're tired but running very strong and on pace.

MC200 eve: Let the butterflies commence

Action shot: 7 mile run at Independence Grove FP

I'm writing this on the eve of the start of the Madison to Chicago 200 Mile Relay that runs through this Saturday. Over 200 teams leave Madison, Wi. early Friday morning and run through the night to finish at Montrose Harbor on Chicago's lakefront.

As mentioned in a previous post I'm runner #2 of my 12 person team (6 guys/6 girls). Our name is Team Shenanigans #148! Catchy name, eh? I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at the hotel in Madison, Wi. this evening. We'll be spending over 30 hours straight together as we make our way to Chicago.

Each runner on the team is assigned to run 3 legs along the route varying different mile distances each. Once the runner finishes his/her leg, a new runner picks up where they left off by trading an arm band "baton". This continues through "Van Tranfser Areas" where fresh runners are dropped off from one of two vehicles to continue pushing forward. We run through the night refreshing runners as we go until all 12 have completed their assigned legs.

It's a crazy system that's carefully choreographed to accomplish the end result- Montrose Harbor in Chicago! At an average 9 minute pace for our team, we should expect to arrive in Chicago around 3:30 pm on Saturday.

I'm a bit nervous. I've never done anything like this before but fell in love with the challenge. I figure my first leg will start around 10:30 a.m. at Olbrich Park in Madison for 6.2 miles. My next leg begins at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wi. for 3.5 miles. My last leg is at Beatrice Jones School in Racine for 6.5 miles.

I hope to be sending Tweets through the entire event and poke in on Facebook as well. Follow me at http://twitter.com/jessejstreet or use the hash tag #mc200. I'll probably send some photos to this blog as well.

Have a great weekend friends!

The MC200 is near

Well, it's been a little while.

I've been spending quite a bit of time studying the maps for the Madison to Chicago relay race, which is coming up in a couple of weeks. It looks pretty scary on paper, even more so when I think about how I've never done this sort of thing before.

I will be runner #2 of a 12 person team. That means I'll be at the front of the line, taking charge to make sure we've got a healthy start. I will be running three legs totaling just over 16 miles beginning in Madison, Wi. through Racine county. The longest leg is about 6.5 miles. My only worry is getting enough rest before each leg, which could be a few hours apart each.

I've ramped up my training considerably the past few weeks. Since recovering from my injury in March, I felt I had gotten behind in my training. My fear was that I was going to rush into things, but truthfully, I've never felt better. My training has been pretty solid, my runs strong, and recovery has been good.

The heat came early this year. It isn't until late June or July that I train specifically to acclimate to the intense heat of summer marathon training. I've already had days where I was running in 90+ temperatures. It was a real drag! Crummy breathing patterns, crazy heart rates, and sweat, sweat, sweat. Fortunately, all of my runs have come on pretty hot days, so the acclimation is happening, whether I want it to or not!

In the next few days, I'll post a few more details about the MC200 relay. I will most likely be Twittering through the entire event, so look out for that.

It's my first real race since the marathon last October.

This is going to be fun!
